June 8, Sansei Restaurant

Everybody’s been talking about Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar. I finally got to be a part of the “in crowd” last Saturday, as Sansei was the chosen venue for my birthday dinner this year. My cousin Jessica and I, not even a month apart in age, enjoyed ourselves immensely. The food was awesome! Courtesy of my aunties and uncles, here’s what Kyle and I ordered. Everything was great, but if we had to rank the dishes, here are our favorites:

#1 Seared Fresh Hawaiian Ahi Salad
We never loved to eat our veggies more! The dressing, a soy sesame onion vinaigrette was super ono! We even took the Kula greens from our Japanese Calamari Salad and ate it with this dressing. This is definitely something we will have again.

#2 “69” Roll
Described as “one good thing on top of another,” this must be the one of the best sushi rolls ever. It’s a California Roll topped with unagi and masago, drizzled with a sweet unagi glaze. It was so good that Jess and Donn ordered one for themselves!

#3 Sansei’s Rock Shrimp Dynamite
Well, my sister Lauri ordered this first, but just as Kyle took a bite of it, he was already ordering another one for ourselves! The texture of this is just incredible-the crispy tempura rock shrimp just melts in your mouth. Flavored with a creamy garlic masago aioli and sweet unagi sauce, this is definitely a winner, too.

#4 Japanese Calamari Salad
One of their specialties, this is a yummy salad. The calamari fritte are tossed in a spicy kojuchang vinaigrette and served over Kula Greens in a crispy won ton basket. Although great, we ditched the spicy sauce, and ate our veggies with the Ahi Salad’s dressing.

#5 Spider Roll
There really isn’t such a thing as a “bad” spider roll. A crispy tempura soft shell crab rolled inside out, with a sweet Thai chili sauce and unagi glaze, it was good, of course, but Kyle and I both agreed that we could eat this almost anywhere.

#6 Kapalua “Butterfry”
Lauri and Jess both ordered this, too. It is fresh snapper, smoked salmon, crab, and veggies in a crispy panko batter roll, served with a tangy ponzu sauce. A great choice against all the chili sauce we digested, but a little too crispy. Still, it was fun to try all the specialty rolls Sansei had to offer.

Although we had mostly sushi and salads, Sansei has a lot to offer. With a menu that’s almost overwhelming, there’s something for everyone. Beware that it’s quite pricey, and since everything tastes so good, it’s easy to eat yourself broke!

Luckily, the bill went to my uncles (thank you!) and we were spared the sore wallet. But food is 50% off after 10 p.m., and 25% off between 5:00 and 5:30, so those are great times to try it out!

It was a great birthday dinner, topped off with free burnt creme desserts for both Jess and myself! Kyle, Lauri, and Jess’ boyfriend Donn enjoyed a tempura ice cream dessert that looked wonderful, too. Gotta go back!

Susan Sensei’s English Lesson #32(スーザン先生の英語講座 その32)

For two years I taught English in Japan, and was “スーザン先生” to my students in Ikaho town, Gunma Prefecture. I will try and introduce new words and phrases for the Japanese visitor to Hawaii. Here is this week’s situation:

今週のレッスン
多くのレストランはバースデー・スペシャル・サービスを行っています。もし誰かのお誕生日をレストランでお祝いする時は、お店の人に聞いてみましょう。

「今日は娘の誕生日です。
何かバースデイ・サービスはありますか?」

“Today is my daughter’s birthday. Do you do anything special for birthdays?”

たいていはデザートがサービスされることが多いようです。バルーンがプレゼントされることも。特にバースデーサービスをしないレストランもありますが、聞いてみて損はありません。Have a nice trip!

Loco Girl’s Profile(ロコ・ガールのプロフィール)

Born in Hilo, I grew up going fishing with Dad, shopping with Mom, and trying to be a good “big sister” to a younger sister and brother. A Waiakea High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa alumni, I taught English in Japan for two years on the JET Program, and am now employed at PacRim Marketing Group, Inc. I love doing a lot of things-shopping, reading, lettering, making jewelry & crafts, watching Friends-and that’s just the start of my list! I like being busy, and am active with the JET Alumni Association (JETAA) and the Honolulu Junior Japanese Chamber of Commerce (HJJCC.) My family and friends are, of course, very important to me, and are why I live a very typical, happy, local-style life in Hawaii and will never leave!
