During the past two years, there have been many weeks when I had to rack my brain just to think of something to write. While at those times, my life felt so terribly boring, there were other times that I was so unbelievably busy that I had to decide what I should write about. Now, at the end of my tenure as the "local girl" for "Hawaii no Arukikata", I want to choose the perfect topic... But all I can think about is the finality of it all. I'll admit, there were times during the past two years that I wanted to stop. Then I'd get an e-mail from a reader saying that my diary touched them. Or, I'd get a phone call from a friend saying that they've been keeping up with my "English lessons." I didn't even realize that reading my diary was my own mother's way of "keeping in touch" with me across the miles. So now I'm kind of sad to be ending this reflective journey of mine. I've been thinking about other "endings" I've experienced recently - coming home to Hawaii after two years in Japan, saying "good-bye" to my co-workers after deciding to attend graduate school - and I'm realizing that neither of these were really an end to anything. I still keep in touch with my friends, students, and colleagues in Japan, and I still visit my old workplace often. I'm optimistic that I will never lose the great relationships I've made while writing as the "local girl." Thank you to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and insipired me throughout the past two years. I am genuinely grateful for all the positive comments, funny e-mails, and warm response. Even after this "assignment" is over, I hope I can continue to write. The teaching program I'm currently in advocates "reflection" as one of the pillars to success. I've found that personal reflection makes me appreciate things in my life and realize just how rich my life is. After all, I may be just your typical "local girl," but I've learned that that's one of the best things to be. --- Here are some memorable photos from the past two years:
