8th American baby food

●Suzanne’s take on rice cereal, jar food, snacks, and more
When I opened a package from my mother-in-law the other day, I found half of the contents MISSING! In their place was a letter from the port authority in Hawaii, letting me know that a bunch of stuff had been confiscated because they contained, in some shape or form, poultry products. The items in question were ? get this ? baby food. Yep, my mother-in-law sent a box full of gourmet Japanese baby food, most of them containing chicken pieces or broth. My heart sank thinking she spent $50 to send a half-empty box over the Pacific Ocean, but moreover, what was I supposed to feed Marsden for dinner!?

This brings us to our topic for this month: baby food in the U.S.A. To those of you with babies, I know I’m not the only one perplexed by the lack of choices in baby food over here. In my opinion, American babies must be fed the blandest, most mysteriously prepared food on the planet. First of all there’s “rice cereal,” considered Baby’s “first solid food” which, if you ask me, is neither rice, nor cereal. Essentially dehydrated starch, rice cereal is prepared with water or breast milk (or formula) into a goopy consistency, and tastes like… well, wet tissue paper. Pediatricians and baby bibles swear by this stuff, at least for the first few weeks. After feeding rice cereal to Marsden (as the doctor ordered) for two days, I tossed the whole box and resorted to the Japanese way of doing things. I cooked “real rice” into a soft porridge, which he seemed to enjoy more anyway.

But life gets a little complicated once baby’s ready to move on to other foods. The ten minutes it takes to strain a half-cup of boiled vegetables is an eternity when Baby is throwing a hungry fit and banging his head against the back of the high chair. If you’re a mom, I shouldn’t have to tell you how absolutely necessary it is to be able to whip out a jar of baby food at a moment’s notice.

So, say you’re at the store. What do you buy? Most grocery stores carry Gerber (America’s classic baby food brand), and its organic cousin, Tender Harvest. Luckily these days, other organic choices like Earth’s Best are becoming more mainstream, and are priced pretty competitively with conventional baby food. Not only are the ingredients more trustworthy (no by-products or preservatives used), but Marsden and I agree they taste better, too. The downside to the organic stuff is that the choices are limited compared to Gerber’s expanded selection, and to my knowledge, none of the organic brands have microwaveable meals. But it helps to keep a few of the jar kinds handy anyway.

Most jar foods are pretty simple fare: a single-ingredient fruit, vegetable, or meat. The fruits and vegetables are decent, and definitely useful when you’re out with your tot, or even when you’re at home and need an extra side dish. When I was really in a bind, Marsden’s meals came straight out of the jar… not that he seemed to mind single servings of room-temperature apple sauce or butternut squash. While I felt guilty for taking the easy way out with his meals, I also convinced myself he shouldn’t develop an overly sophisticated palate too early. But boy, did he smack his lips when I served up the occasional Japanese baby food!

Getting back to the bottled stuff, if you should avoid anything, it’s the Gerber meats. They’re edible but gross, with a taste and consistency closer to unseasoned gravy than actual meat. In the last couple of years, though, Gerber introduced “2nd Foods” and “3rd Foods,” with slightly larger portions, slightly better texture, and slightly more variety. Even so, they pale in comparison to Japanese brands that package meals by Baby’s age, delicately but deliciously seasoned to satisfy even an adult’s palate. Gerber also has a line of microwaveable meals, as well as a few selections of Latin flavors. But as far as we’ve taste-tested them, it seems Gerber still doesn’t know that babies have taste buds, too.

Now that Marden’s ten months old, eating-on-the-go has become easier, as long as I order food that can be adjusted to his taste. The hardest thing right now is keeping up with his voracious appetite, and remembering to keep a snack ready to shove in his mouth. Gerber did do one thing right, as I learned while grocery shopping with both kids the other afternoon. Marsden started throwing an all-out tantrum while sitting in the shopping cart, so I detoured down the baby aisle, grabbed a tube of Gerber’s new Fruit Puffs, and had Kyrie pop them in his mouth (“I’m a mommy bird!” she exclaimed) as I continued shopping. The airy, bite-sized snacks were tasty, healthy, and fun. And best of all, they allowed me an extra 15 minutes of shopping. The Puffs, in my opinion, are a far better alternative to the American snack staple, Cheerios, which are quite bland and tough to swallow. Japanese snacks like baby sembei and wafers (available at Marukai and Shiorikiya) are also pretty good, but they do get pretty messy. And as for that “tamago boro” stuff ? apart from tasting nostalgic, there’s nothing to it than egg, starch, and lots of sugar. I say, just skip it.
