●HELLO AGAIN, SAN FRANCISCO!
Happy New Year, readers! I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season. I, for one, am glad it’s over. The mad rush leading up to Christmas had me and the kids sick, but even so, a day after the excitement (and stress) peaked, my family and I packed our bags for a week-long trip to San Francisco.
It was a homecoming of sorts, especially since Paul hadn’t been back to SF since we moved in 2003. He’d been longing to go back for a while, but a planned solo trip last April got quashed when I went into labor early and delivered him a baby instead. (It wasn’t my fault but) I did feel sorry for him that his last “weekend of debauchery” never happened. So I pooled together all the mileage we had, found a vacation rental on craigslist.com, and proposed we take a family homage to Fog City. |

One of the reasons I was glad to leave SF was its slightly schizophrenic weather, which meant you had to leave the house wearing three or four layers, ready to be peeled off or put on at any given moment during the day. On this trip, though, SF weather was uncharacteristically stable, meaning that it rained every single day. Lucky us, we flew into SF with a friendly storm front that stayed in town until the morning we left. As far as the weather goes, Hawaii definitely has one up on San Fran.
But after all, we’ve lived in Hawaii long enough that a little rain (or a downpour) doesn’t stop us from getting things done. We were on a mission! Paul had a long list of places to go, and people to see. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we hopped around town to our favorite eats and waxed sentimental as we strolled (in the rain) around our old haunts. San Fran is one of those dense and compact cities where it’s fun to just walk around the different neighborhoods and buzz in and out of stores and restaurants. Our favorite area is a ten-block stretch on Fillmore Street, home to swanky, little boutiques, cafes, and eateries. On a typical day, an hour of window shopping uphill along Fillmore burned off enough lunch (spaghetti Bolognese and smoked chicken salad at Vivande), to splurge on Tango Gelato’s homemade cinnamon ice cream for a mid-day snack. For dinner, we popped into German joint Suppenkuche for an ice cold wheat beer and hearty venison sausage, before taking another leisurely stroll and settling into a cozy cafe for dessert. On other nights, it was saag curry at Raja’s, Peking duck at Parc Hong Kong, or pork pad thai at Jitlada. Sorry, Hawaii, but San Fran’s definitely got the edge when it comes to a good nosh. |

Mornings, particular, were awesome. In fact, I’d go to bed the night before, thinking of what (and where) I’d want to eat for breakfast. San Fran does not lack in the sheer number of bakeries and breakfast places, so it was often a toss up of what we’d have that morning ? would it be Belgian crepes at Frijtz? Or chicken hash and pancakes at Ella’s? Or maybe we’d just pick up some freshly baked croissants for the road at Cafe Boulange, and drive up to Napa.
In fact we did all of the above… except the drive to Napa. The one road trip we planned to wine country (a must-see when in the Bay Area) never happened, no thanks to the pesky little storm. So instead we spent one afternoon indoors at the Exploratorium, a fabulous science museum fit for kids but fun for adults, too. Kyrie (and Paul) had a blast there, tinkering with science experiments like cloud-making machines and colorful prism-makers. The Exploratorium is similar to the Discovery Center in Honolulu, but the enormous scale of this place just blows away the competition. |

So what was breakfast that day? Incidentally, it was New Year’s Day, and we decided to celebrate our first meal for 2006 with the breakfast of champions: double-cheeseburgers at In-N-Out by Fisherman’s Wharf. After eating osechi every New Year’s for the last 30 years, a greasy burger paired with fries and a chocolate milkshake was actually pretty refreshing. But as good as they were, Paul and I agreed Teddy’s Burgers in Honolulu takes another one for the home team. We’ll take Teddy’s any day over a double-double at In-N-Out.
Ever since we moved from SF, arguing over which is the better city ? SF or Honolulu ? has been a favorite pastime. So how did the two cities stack up against each other after this trip? Paul still likes the food, fun, and SF lifestyle. And I prefer Hawaii’s pristine air, the warmth of its people, and the great environment it provides my kids. We’re split on the issue, but I can say with confidence, I was glad to be home. |

| 読者の皆様、明けましておめでとうございます。良いクリスマス、お正月シーズンをお過ごしになりましたか？ 「やっと終わった〜」とため息をついているのは私だけでしょうか？ 12月中我が家のメンバーは風邪で次々とダウンしたにも関わらず、お祝いムード(とストレス)が頂点を達したクリスマスの翌日に(私の母含む)家族5人で一週間のサンフランシスコ旅行に旅立ちました。
帰ってきたぞ、サンフラン！ 一声を挙げて喜んでいたのは、三年前ホノルルに引っ越して以来「サンフラン帰省」を夢見てきた旦那のポール。去年の春に遊びに行くはずだったのが、出発数時間前に予定がかなり早まって第二児が誕生してしまい、念願の一人旅は実現せず終わってしまいました。(私のせいじゃないけど)一応かわいそうに思ったのでマイレージを掻き集めて、インターネットでアパートを探し、一家団欒で行くことにしたのです。
サンフランシスコは不安定なお天気なのと気温が一定しない為、常に重ね着をして一日中服を脱いだり着たりするのが当たり前。でも普段は気まぐれなSFのお天気も今回に限って来る日も来る日も雨が根強く続きました。結局滞在中は雨と曇りオンリー。お天気に関してはハワイが断然に優位！ でもちょっとやそっとの雨でめげている場合じゃない！ ハワイでは雨(特にスコール)に慣れてるのでSFでも雨の中、行きたい場所と会いたい人のリストを片手に早速行動を開始。朝、昼、晩と町中のお気に入りだったレストランを巡ったり、懐かしい近所をブラブラするのがこの旅行の第一の目的でした。SFは案外と密集した都市なので、好きなエリアのお店やレストランを散歩がてら見て回るのが絶好の楽しみ方。
私達が一番気に入ってるフィルモア･ストリートはカワイイお店やちょっとこ洒落たカフェや食べ物屋さんがずっしり並ぶ10ブロック範囲の緩やかな坂道。お昼にたいらげたヴィヴァンデのボロネーズ･スパゲッティーとチキン･サラダはフィルモアを散歩しながら消耗して、おやつに手作りジェラートのお店タンゴ･ジェラートでシナモン･アイスを楽しんだり、夜はドイツ料理で有名なズッペン･クーケで鹿のソーセージと冷た〜い、美味し〜い(もちろんドイツ産の)麦生ビールを楽しんでから、また軽く散歩をして近所のカフェでデザートを食べたり。 明日はインドのラージャでサグ･カレー、明後日はパーク香港の北京ダック、明々後日はジトラーダのパッドタイ、と毎日の食事が待ち遠しい一週間でした。グルメにとってSFはまさにパラダイス。ここはハワイと比べてSFに一本！
食の話が続きますが、私は朝飯派。翌朝のご飯を思い浮かべながら寝る超食いしん坊。朝飯屋のチョイスには尽きないサンフランですから「今朝は何を食べよう？ フリッツのベルギークレープ？ エラッズのチキン･ハッシュ？ それともカフェ･ブランジュの焼きたてクロワッサンをお持ち帰りにしてナパ･バレーまでドライブ？」なんて幸せな悩みに迷っちゃいました。
ちなみに上記の事柄すべてを果たしました… と言いたいところですけど、生憎の天気の為ナパへのドライブは残念ながらぽしゃりました(もちろん食べ物に関してはぜ〜んぶ制覇)。ベイ･エリアまで来てワイン･カントリーを見れないなんてガックリ！ その代わり、大人も子供も楽しめる博物館、エクスプラトリアムで一日を過ごしました。雲を作る機械やプリズム等、体で感じて手で触れられる面白い実験が沢山あって、大人も混じって大はしゃぎ。ハワイにもディスカバリー･センターという似たような催しがありますが、SFのはスケールが違う！
気になるその日の朝食は？ たまたま元日に当たってお店もほとんど閉まってたので、西海岸でかの有名なイン･アンド･アウトでチーズバーガーを食べることにしました。生まれて始めてのおせち無き新年．．．ちょっとおきて破りみたいですけど正月早々にバーガー、フライド･ポテト、チョコ･シェーキというのも案外新鮮味がありました！しかし（これポールも同意）、ハンバーガーだけはやっぱりホノルルのテディーズ･バーガーズに限る！ これまたハワイにもう一本！
さて、SFを離れて以来、ホノルルとどっちの街が住み易いか、楽しいか、暇があれば意見の交換をしてきたポールと私。今回の旅行の末の結果は？ ポールはやっぱりレジャー、グルメ、ライフスタイルを含めて今だにサンフラン寄り。ご飯はメチャクチャ美味しかったけど、私はやっぱり空気がきれいで、人が温厚で、子育てにふさわしいハワイが好き。旅が終わって思わず「帰ってきたぞー、ハワイ！」と一声挙げてしまいました。 |

娘：エリン･霧江(きりえ)、愛称キーちゃん。外見は恥かしがり屋、家では結構「キレちゃう」典型的内弁慶。ハロー･キティとパパをこよなく愛す保育園児。ちなみに、ハワイの人達のひとついいところは名前に「ちゃん」付けをしても分かってくれること。サンフランに住んでた頃、「キーちゃん、キーちゃん」と呼んでる私は廻りの人に「なんだそりゃ？ 中国語かい？」と聞くかの様に変な顔をされました。こっちでは白人でも平気に「キーちゃん」と呼んでくれます。
